The meeting of the Odessa Standing Group on Theory, History and Historiography of the International Relations took place on April 26, 2016. As ususal, this meeting took place at Odessa House of Scientists.

Maria Sarakutsa, Associate Professor, School of Law and Economy, Odessa I. Mechnikov National University presented on “Some Problems with the EU Migration Policy”.

The speaker has outlined some major stages and steps in evolution of the EU migration policy, since the Dublin convention of 1990 and up to the present day. She had pointed out some of the difficulties which the European Union has encountered in doing this. One of them, obviously, was, and still is, the coordination of EU policies in this realm, on one hand, and of the particular member states, on the other.

Mechnikov National University, Sergii Glebov, Associate Professor of the International Relations Department ONU, Iryna Maksymenko and Denys Kuzmin, Assistant Professors of the International Relations Department at Odessa I. I. Mechnikov National University made comments.

The discussion was focused specifically on the current migration challenge, why has it come so suddenly, as it seems, and what to do to address it in an adequate way, keeping both the values and norms of the EU intact.
