September meeting of the Seminar on the theory, history and historiography of international relations was dedicated to the theme of biopolitics. The guest presenters were Andrey Makarychev (University of Tartu) and Alexandra Yatsyk (University of Uppsala).

They spoke about biopolitics on September 20, 2017 in the premises of Center for International Studies. First some fundamentals of these experts’ view on the theory of biopolitics were presented. They then proceeded to the analysis of particular cases of biopolitics in the post-Soviet region. The three chosen cases concerned Ukraine, Estonia and Georgia, but the conversation went well beyond these three. Some discussion has ensued on the usage and understanding of biopolitics by current leadership in Russia.

The discussion then went to certain examples of biopolitics presenting itself in other regions of the world. The participants were fascinated by the subject and the possibilities of this theoretical approach being used in applied analysis of international relations, security studies and foreign policy.
