Volodymyr Dubovyk, the Director of the Center for International Studies, took part in the public debate «National security of Ukraine: where should we look for guarantees?» on December 8, 2015 in Kyiv.
The meeting was organized by the Ilko Kucheriv “Democratic Initiatives” Foundation.

In his presentation V. Dubovyk spoke about the current situation in Ukraine with regard to a search for an optimal viable model to provide for security of the country in a strategic perspective. There are various options to look at: maintain status-quo, militarize with conventional weapons, renuclearize, “finlandization” of Ukraine, patronage by the U.S.A. and NATO membership. V. Dubovyk reached his conclusion on only the latter option as being the one that might work over time. Right now, of course, Ukraine is not in position to move forward towards the membership in a decisive and quick manner. However, it could better prepare itself for such an eventuality with carrying out the reforms, eradicating corruption, modernizing the military and more. In the meantime the current high level of public support for the idea to join NATO should be upheld. This level should not be taken for granted: the systemic and well-coordinated public information campaign on NATO should be in place.
